There were six of us on foot tonight in three teams.
We reported to 311 three street lights that were dark on Cochran and a couple on Hauser.
A bit before 11pm, we came across three people on Cloverdale who were wondering who we were with the yellow jackets. When we explained we were with the volunteer safety patrol, they proceeded to tell us about their neighbor in their apartment building who is using drugs and the parade of people going in and out of that apartment. They had called the police about it and were awaiting a response. Eric called one of his officer contacts and left a message.
They also told us about their Miracle Mile networking group on Yahoo Groups called, The Mile.
A little before midnight hundreds of bicycles streamed down Wilshire Blvd going westbound some of them running red lights. We were told that periodically on Friday nights there is a mass ride of bicyclists. We soon heard a lot of screaming and yelling coming from the intersection of Cochran and Wilshire. We went to investigate and saw that a motorist and bicyclist had collided and the two in the vehicle were engaged in a shouting match with half a dozen bicyclists.
Paramedics were called and the unit on Cochran and 3rd were soon on the scene. The rider appeared to be shaken up but was conscious as the paramedics checked him out. The LAPD had not yet arrived by the time I called it a night.

after the team members left i remained until the officers arrived. about 1 1/2 hours later.
the cyclist was transported to the hospital to be checked out and i took his bike to my house. i will return it to him on monday.
i also reported the iformation we received from our neighbors about the heroin and crack use and domestic vilolence but was told they have to report it themselves.
the police were NOT aware of our group or that we are patroling.
obviously officer thomas has NOT spread the word about our efforts. very dissapointing.
it seemed that the neighbors that reported the drug use have his number as well and he has not responded to their numerous calls.
this is a concern of mine if the police are not going to take our efforts seriously.
for my offical first night it was pretty eventful.

It's wonderful you were there to help, but I'm so sorry that happened. I have contacted LAPD and I hope we can have a party soon to get to know more neighbors and increase visibility. thank you all for doing this.
Sorry for leaving this as a comment..since I know that Denise is out of town. My car was broken into on Ridgeley Dr below Wilshire over the weekend. As we all know, parking has been ridiculous...over in our area especially with the construction going on. I have parked my car there with no problems for the 2 years I have lived here, so this was unexpected. I was told by the contruction people this morning that this is the second time this has happened within the last two weeks. Also, a neighbor was walking by and he said he had spotted it over the weekend, I had left it parked there all weekend because I was trying to walk places. There is supposed to be a security guard at that construction site...obviously not so much. I made a police report but I am not sure what else I can do. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I don't feel safe parking my car anymore...and I can't afford to pay for people breaking into it. Thanks...Danielle
Sorry to hear that, Denise. Traditionally Miracle Mile has had high vehicle theft & vandalism incidents. I used to live by the El Rey for one year and on separate occasions had my car stolen from Ridgeley just above Wilshire and broken into while parked on Burnside just below Wilshire. There's not much to suggest except to park in well lit areas or move. I personally moved mostly for that reason and got an apartment with a garage not too far from MM about four years ago.
On one of the rare occasions I chose street parking over my garage my car was broken into. Go figure.
